But buying a diamond ring with a fake diamond and not knowing about it is a terrible investment. Whether you buy it online or in a local shop there is a small chance that someone will sell you a fake diamond.
So here are some tips that can help you detect a fake diamond:
- Always ask the seller whether it's a diamond or a moissanite stone. The untrained eye cannot tell the difference; the moissanite is a manufactured diamond and not a real one. Why this tip is important? Because some of the retailers have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Weight: fake diamonds weight around 55% more than real diamonds. I know that this is hard to measure and to compare, but it is an effective way of spotting fake diamonds.
Check the stone for damage: you probably know that diamonds are extremely durable so if there are some scratchings on the stone then it's highly probable that you have a fake diamond.
The transparency test: place the diamond upside down on a newspaper and if you can read the text then you got yourself a fake one.
The fog test: breathe on your diamond and if it stays foggy for a few seconds than it's probably a fake diamond. Real diamonds clear up instantly.
Check the setting and mounting of the stone. If they didn't use gold or silver then your diamond is probably fake. If these precious stones have such a high price then why don't use the finest material to make the jewelry?
UV(ultra violet) test: if you put the diamond under an UV light they have a blue fluorescence. Almost all fake diamonds don't pass this test, but it's not 100% accurate. Be aware that the lack of blue fluorescence can mean a diamond with very high quality(which is very rare)!
Avoid the glass scratching test: some recommend that you try to scratch a glass with your diamond. Real diamonds can scratch a glass (and fakes cannot), but there is a chance that you ruin your diamond during this test. Even a small imperfection can reduce it's value considerably!
Ask for a certificate for your diamond: if it's a real diamond than your shouldn't have a problem obtaining a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Avoid big sales: a diamond doesn't looses it's value. Nobody can give a 30%-50% discount for this kind of precious stone. If they have such discounts then something must be wrong with the stone.
The reflection color: real diamonds reflections should be in shades of gray, while fake diamonds have rainbow sparkles.
Take it to a jewelry appraiser: he could give you the most accurate information about your diamond. But if the verdict is unfavorable and you don't trust completely in the appraiser then take it to another one. It might be the situation when the appraiser undervalues your precious stone for different reasons.
